Living Spaces: Creating A Home that Sparks Joy
We all know a house is not a home. Well, not at first anyway. A house can provide shelter, it can make us feel secure and safe from outside forces. But what makes a house a home, is when one takes the time to make a space for each beautiful piece they have in their property, giving even the tiniest item its home.
The beauty of the KonMari method® is that we delegate each item we love (or need) a designated home and return it there after use. This keeps our homes organised and easy to keep tidy. This simple concept was a game changer for me, it allowed my home to run seamlessly and reduced the stress of trying to find items.
This method was created by Marie Kondo, the best-selling author of “The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up” and “Spark Joy”. Her method has changed how people live their lives; they surround themselves with their beautiful items, following the principle of what “sparks joy” for them. Simply put, if an item does not spark joy in you then there’s no space for it in your home.
You too can turn your house into a home. The KonMari method® allows you to create order, serenity, and harmony in your home. Begin with your clothes, then books, paperwork, Komono and finally sentimental items. It’s important to tackle these items step by step according to the process.
Working category by category, you gather similar items together and then “joy check” everything within that category. You need to make sure each item in your possession sparks joy for you; decide if you love it, or need it and, if so, you store it and use it with pride.
And of course, those items that don’t spark joy, you simply thank the item for the value it has given you then let it go with gratitude.
Make sure to create a home each item so you can also create a home for yourself. When you value your possessions, you value your surroundings. In return, the living spaces we occupy make us feel at home.
